On 22 January 2024, changes took place for some temporary residents of Canada, namely for students from abroad studying in Canada and their family members. This decision was announced by Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, during a press conference in Montreal.<\/p>\n
The restrictions are caused by two main factors: a significant number of educational institutions with a bad reputation, which, in fact, allowed students from abroad and their family members to move to Canada by paying money, as well as the factor of rapidly rising of housing and rental prices, which reaches historical records (in 2023: 10% increase in prices on average across Canada, with a maximum of 16% in Alberta).<\/p>\n
However, the changes will apply to a separate category of students who receive a bachelor’s degree. The number of permits will be reduced by a third for them, and a total of 360,000 will be issued in 2024. All Canadian provinces will have quotas on the number of foreign students who can study at local colleges and universities. The calculation will be based on the population of a particular province, which will help to achieve sustainable dynamics in providing high-quality educational services. However, these innovations do not apply to study permits for schoolchildren and master students.<\/p>\n
Now international students applying for a Canadian study visa will also have to provide a special document from the province for a positive consideration of their application.
