On 15 February 2024, Immigration Service of the Government of Alberta suspended the acceptance of new applications under the Alberta Opportunity Stream for those wishing to obtain PR in Canada<\/a>. This pathway was one of the most popular in Alberta province. There is a suspension in further work with PNP applications that were created as drafts, as well as applications without paid government fees.<\/p>\n

The pause in accepting new applications will make it possible to speed up the processing of already submitted applications, and will also allow the Immigration Service to focus on filling the shortage of workers in the healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, tourism and hospitality sectors.<\/p>\n

In particular, it was announced that the Tourism and Hospitality Stream in Alberta was opened for applications for immigration to the province on 13th<\/sup> of \u00a0February 2024. Applications submission \u00a0will be available in this pathway from 1 March, 2024. Details on the requirements will also be available later.<\/p>\n

The decision was made to pause admission of PNP applications under the Alberta Opportunity Stream, among other things, to ensure that applications are processed in a timely manner and in accordance with the standards of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Another reason is the number of immigration permits issued by the Government of Canada. About 5,000 nominations were issued under the Alberta Opportunity Stream out of a total of 10,000 for 2023, which is the highest number among other pathways of the provincial immigration program. Meanwhile, the number of nominations for 2024 has not yet been agreed.<\/p>\n

5,093 applications were filled under the Alberta Opportunity Stream during 2023. As of February 2024, applications filledbefore September 2023 were being processed. The standard time for processing an immigration application in this pathway was the longest, averaging about 6 months.<\/p>\n

It is expected resumption of application accepting after the decision on the number of immigration nominations for 2024, in particular for the province of Alberta, as well as after establishing a process of considering provincial applications in accordance with the priority in filling the shortages of employees of specific businesses.
