The changes will come into force on 26 September 2024. Employment under the LMIA will be suspended for some metropolitan areas (100,000 inhabitants or more) for low-paid occupations. Employees will be able to move to Canada to metropolitan areas to work on a seasonal and permanent basis in the following industries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Agricultural;<\/li>\n<li>Food processing;<\/li>\n<li>Fish processing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers have also received additional rules on the employment of foreigners in metropolitan areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Employees from abroad should not exceed 10% of the total number of employees;<\/li>\n<li>The term of employment of foreigners is limited to 1 year (previously it was 2 years).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At present, the most popular metropolitan areas for settlement, which exceed the unemployment rate, are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windsor (Ontario) &#8211; 9.1%;<\/li>\n<li>Saint John (New Brunswick) &#8211; 8.0%;<\/li>\n<li>Edmonton (Alberta) &#8211; 8.0%;<\/li>\n<li>Toronto (Ontario) &#8211; 7.7%;<\/li>\n<li>Calgary (Alberta) &#8211; 7.6%;<\/li>\n<li>Hamilton (Ontario) &#8211; 7.2%;<\/li>\n<li>Regina (Saskatchewan) &#8211; 6.6%;<\/li>\n<li>Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo (Ontario) &#8211; 6.5%;<\/li>\n<li>London (Ontario) &#8211; 6.5%;<\/li>\n<li>Ottawa-Gatineau &#8211; 6.3%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the percentage of temporary residents in Canada is approximately 6.8%. However, the Government of Canada plans to reduce this figure to 5% over the next 3 years.
