On 1 October 2024, Marc Miller, the Head of IRCC, announced an agreement between the federal Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon on additional support measures for temporary workers in the territory on their way of applying for permanent resident status by 2027.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The territory of Yukon has a very small population of around 47,000 people. Despite its small population and northern location, the territory is attractive for workers from abroad. New work permits will be granted to these workers while they go through the process of obtaining permanent resident status under the provincial nominee program in Canada, which operates in Yukon. The most important criteria for support are that they will be applying for permanent resident status in 2025 or 2026, as well as actively contributing to the economic and social development of the territory. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"onclick-widget\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"#\">Free consultation<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said: \u201cBy giving new work permits for skilled workers in Yukon, we are not only supporting local labour market needs in critical sectors, but also giving more temporary residents a clear pathway to permanent residence. This agreement is a key step in our ongoing collaboration with provinces and territories to spread the benefits of immigration across the country, and strengthen the social and economic fabric of our communities. This option remains on the table for other provinces and territories who need to retain their skilled workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of Canada provides facts for 2023 that strongly indicate the importance of supporting immigration through provincial nominee programs in Canada:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>About 23% of all applications for permanent resident status were submitted through territorial and provincial nominee programs in Canada<\/li>\n<li>About 40% of all planned applications for economic immigration (under employment) were made through territorial and provincial nominee programs in Canada<\/li>\n<li>Provincial programs have become the largest category of all economic permanent resident programs under the Immigration Levels Plan<\/li>\n<li>About 157,000 people obtained PR status in Canada through provincial and territorial programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranj Pillai, Yukon Premier, commented on the landmark agreement with the federal Government of Canada: \u201cThis agreement is a critical development that will allow foreign nationals to remain in the Yukon and continue to provide valuable contributions to our labour market until they are able to apply to the Yukon Nominee Program. I want to thank the Government of Canada for its support in implementing this collaborative approach to immigration in the territory. This temporary measure will help provide greater certainty for foreign nationals who call the Yukon home as we work to support their transition to permanent residency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential applicants must submit applications for the new work permit under support measures to the Department of Economic Developmen of Yukon. The application deadline is 15 October 2024 at 4:30 pm. The territorial government will issue letters of support to candidates for applications to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
