The new procedure for obtaining permanent residency in Canada through the Alberta Provincial Nomine Program will be implemented. The changes occurred at the initial stage of Expression of Interest (EOI). The reform of the process follows the recent introduction of a new system for selecting candidates for immigration in Alberta. The new rules will come into effect on 30 September 2024.
The previous Expression of Interest (EOI) process was launched in June 2024, but failed to work properly. Thousands of potential immigrants to Canada were unable to receive an invitation to proceed with their PR application in Canada.
The new procedure will be more focused on the local economy of the province, and will allow a wider range of people to apply for the selection process.
The most important changes in the first stage of selection policy compared to the previous system:
- Introducing a points-based system for receiving an immigration invitation from the province of Alberta;
- Selections will be made based on the highest scores among all applications submitted (as in the Express Entry Canada system);
- Registration for the selection system will be open throughout the entire period without any specific dates;
- The ranking will be based on experience, skills, the need of the province of Alberta for certain occupations, etc.
Preparation for the process of obtaining permanent resident status under the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program should begin with a consultation with an immigration consultant in Canada, who, after analysing the individual situation, will be able to calculate the chances of receiving an invitation based on the main criteria:
- Calculate potential rank among applicants based on English language test score, level of education, and amount of work experience.
- Provide advice on how to improve your rank among potential immigrants based on the requirements of the Government of Alberta.
- Taking into account the changes in the ranking among applicants and Alberta provincial immigration rules, keep in touch with an immigration consultant to understand your prospects for receiving an invitation to the further process.
The proposed changes should reduce the processing time for permanent resident applications. As of 25 July 2024, for example, applications submitted under the Alberta Opportunity Stream on 7 December 2023 were considered. And this is the most popular stream for applying for immigration in Alberta. The reforms are intended to make it more dynamic for temporary residents of Alberta, including Ukrainians with CUAET visas, to obtain permanent resident status in Canada.
